Our History
HIG INC., also known as The Home Improvement Guide Inc., was established in 2002 and is owned and operated by Ken Sherman. With fifteen employees, HIG boasts a combined construction experience of 180 years on staff. Ken Sherman grew up in the construction industry in South Florida. His father owned Four Sons Construction where he began working summers at the age of 10 and by 16 was a full time carpenter. Leaving his family-owned construction company at the age of 20, Ken went on to run the third largest roofing company in South Florida by the age of 25. Ken helped build sales of 5.5 million and supervised a staff of 200 employees.
Relocating to the Capital Region to raise his family 2 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida, Ken was surprised to find that the Construction Industry in the Capital Region was lacking the same licensing and regulations that South Florida had in place. It seemed anyone in the Capital Region with a pick up truck and a hammer was a contractor. Ken saw the need for professionalism, and has set a path for his company to give the industry just that. Ken Sherman has become very active in the Capital Region Builders and Remodelers Association, recently being voted to sit on the board of directors by his peers in the industry. Ken has been part of the committee that puts on the Parade of Homes, which highlights the best builders in the industry and their newly built homes. In the 18 years Ken has been in the Capital Region he has seen a change in the industry, where today you can find a builder with a great reputation, who you can count on to do what they say.
Our Mission
Ken’s business started with one mission in mind, “To play the client’s advocate at all times.” The Home Improvement Guide Inc. is just that. We help to guide our clients through the construction process, from start to finish. We place our clients’ needs before even our own. Our motto here at HIG Inc. is “Setting New Standards For Professionalism.” This way of doing business has created clients that refer us to everyone, generations of families that use our services, and lasting relationships that speak of who we are. We are unique in that we only build one house at a time. We work closely with our clients to develop budgets, designs, plans and time lines for their projects. The homes that we build reflect out client’s style and won’t be seen down the street. We pride ourselves on having a long history of completing projects on time and on budget!
